Maundy Thursday Service

About the Service

The ancient Tenebrae service, from which tonight’s service is derived, dates back to the eighth century early church. Coming from the Latin word meaning “darkness,” Tenebrae depicts through the extinguishing of candles and the dimming of lights in the sanctuary the flight of the disciples and the approaching crucifixion. As the lights dim, shadows become greater in number and more prominent.
